Various school related ephemera, family photographs, poetry, and other miscellaneous items from Frank S. Dewey who was Superintendent to the Alpena Public Schools from 1872 to 1879 and author of “Alpena County, its Shore-lines and Terraces…,” a geology published in 1892.

Biographical / Historical

Franklin S. Dewey (F.S. Dewey) was a resident of the City of Alpena, MI for more than 50 years having moved to Alpena in 1871 after accepting the position of superintendent of the public schools. Dewey held this position while also giving public lectures on natural sciences for eight years. Prior to his move to Alpena, Dewey graduated from the University of Michigan in 1872, earning his masters degree.

In 1879, Dewey announced his retirement from the superintendet position. Soon after he joined the Board of Education and opened a grocers store with H.R. Morse.

Abstract

In 1871, Franklin S. Dewey and his family to moved to Alpena to accept the position for superintendent fr the Alpena Public Schools. This collection contains various school related ephemera from Dewey's time in the education field, family photographs, poetry, and other items created or collected by Frank S. Dewey.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

On April 15, 2008, the Besser Museum’s (BMFNEM) Board of Trustees passed a motion to de-accession most portions of its archival collection in order to focus on its artifact collection. Collection was originally donated to BMFNEM by Sarah Hepburn in 1980.
